What is Fantasy Cycling?
For those who have never heard the term Fantasy sports, it is a game present in every single sports. It involves the selection of players or riders who earn you points based on their real lives performances. After the selection of a ‘team’, anyone is allowed to enter any league of their own creation or join their friends’ one to compete against each other. Fantasy games have this power of providing neutrality and makes participants cheer on their choices, instead of focusing on a single person or team.
Those playing other fantasy sports, such as Fantasy premier league, can affirm that interest is increased. Fantasy cycling increases eagerness and passion to follow by 100 folds. There are many fantasy cycling games and even more popping up during the Tour. The Tour De France, even has its own fantasy game. Velogames has been present for 25 years and is very popular among cycling fans and even professional riders. Free of any commitment, it is run solely by a normal family man with kids who started it all back during his university days. You can find out more about the story behind it here.
Why Velogames?
Velogames has seduced everyone with its simplicity compared to other games. It involves the selection of riders only once prior to the start, without having to worry about changes everyday and watch your riders perform. Velogames is actually open through out the season for men and women races with separate competitions as well as combined ones. This freedom of not having to commit to every single race has convinced. It is very important to note that 'Velogames Fantasy Cycling is not an official partner of, nor claims any association with, any professional cycling race organisation, any international sporting body or any professional cycling team.’ Thus many races do not go by their official names.

After registering, you will just need to enter your team:
With a provided budget of 100 points, you will need to enter a team of 9 riders :
2 All-Rounders,
2 Climbers,
1 Sprinter,
3 Unclassed Riders
1 Wild Card
'The Wild Card selection may be from any rider category, and allows a team manager to specialise somewhat in the team they pick'. This categorization of riders is however only present in Grand tours.

After each stage, riders are given points according to their performances as long as they are in the races. The scoring system of the game can be found here. Points earned by each rider cumulate to your total points.
Important announcement for Velogames regulars :
In response to the moaning about withdrawal and uncertainty due to Covid and crashes, Velogames has introduced the Stage Hunter classification.
As we go into the Tour, we will all learn more about it and get accustomed. While making your initial team selection, there are 2 things to be kept in mind:
1. The velogames existing form as we all know still exists and still the same. The stage Hunter classification is secondary, separate game to keep those who have lost many riders still interested.
2. A total of 9 transfers will be awarded only as from Stage 3. So no need to worry about it for now. We will all go through it together.
How to make a team selection?
In a perfect world, without Covid and crashes, this arguably could be the winning. However, apart from living in a perfect world, we also have a budget of 100 points and our' perfect team' costs 142 points.
How to get a proper team in 100 points?
Doing good in Velogames, thus involves luck but mainly skills about getting the right combinations. Skills that I can honestly cannot boast myself of having.
